Turning Tables Inc. understands that during these times things are unpredictable and tensions are high. While we are saddened by the tragic killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and Rayshard Brooks, we are proud of the tremendous efforts that have been made by allies, advocating for change. The protests and vocalities have brought up a great issue that so many, including Turning Tables Inc. have said before: we are not treated as equal, and indeed, black lives do matter.
For the past 3 years, Turning Tables Inc. has been working tirelessly to not only appreciate, reinforce, and advocate for black lives, but to deeply push for the minority voice to be heard and felt in the dance society. Through our annual showings, we have showcased 30 choreographers, and over 100 dancers that have emphasized to audiences the most pertinent discriminatory practices in the dance field: Underrepresentation, an unequal Standard, and implicit Bias, while also celebrating with dance themes of Pride and Acceptance. Through our outreach program we have touched the untapped potential of many young underserved artists, who have not had equal access and opportunities to dance.
Our next initiative is in direct alignment with the Turning Tables mission and the initial goals I had when starting Turning Tables Inc.: providing equal dance access to everyone regardless of one's circumstances. We are so excited to launch SITT, the inaugural virtual summer intensive by Turning Tables Inc. Through SITT we hope to provide unparalleled dance education through our amazing guest artists: Alysia "Allie" Johnson, Bridget L. Moore, Gregory Dolbashian, Kevin Pajarillaga, Michelle Gibson, and Mike Esperanza, and give participants the opportunity to participate in stimulating conversation so that we all may be able to understand the world around us.
Thanks to generous donations from Brown Girls Do Ballet and Origin Bank, we will be providing 5 scholarships for dancers to attend SITT for free as well as offering a scholarship for a select dancer to attend the dance summer program of their choice in the Summer of 2021.
We appreciate and value all verbal, internet, and financial support and we will continue to fulfill our commitment of diversifying our dance society.
